Hank Bought A Bus Project Transformed A School Bus Into A Tiny Living Space

Hank bought a bus, that’s the title of this project but really, Hank did buy a bus and convert it into a mobile tiny living space. As an architecture student, Hank was tired of drawing buildings for imaginary clients with many details that he didn’t fully get it, so he started to work his own project, exploring details and working with his hands at full scale. The school bus was purchased on Craigslist for $3000 and it required $6000 in improvements, the result is a cozy living space that costs less than a down payment for a house. Although we think it’s an amazing work, the architecture student still feels that he didn’t explore thoroughly of the bus potential, his goal was to show people the possibility of converting an existing vehicle to something different.

This school bus project demonstrates the value of full scale iteration in architectural education, it shows how we can build a small structure with simple detailing that turns out to be more valuable than designing a complex building which is poorly understood. The images below describe the flexibility of each object inside the bus to accommodate your everyday needs while you’re traveling.

Gen-X Buskers Amp : Mobile Musical Equipment for Street Performers by Nathan McDonald

The problem all musicians have is the transportation of their musical equipment, and it is because of this that you will often see a guitarist (for example) struggling down the street with his/her guitar and case, an amplifier, and a backpack full of other stuff they need (like cables, foot pedals, a microphone and stand, and a drink).

Based on extensive research done by Nathan McDonald, a product designer, he found that buskers (street performers) have two options in the way they perform: they can either play acoustically and strain their voices to be heard, or they can play electrically but have to bring their own power source. The most common power source for this is a car battery, which is just something else to carry, and car batteries are not light! This is where the Gen-X Buskers Amp comes in.

The Gen-X Buskers Amp is an innovation in mobile musical equipment. The Gen-X incorporates a back-pack style design, this is to aid in the transportation of musical equipment, since it is easy to carry and other smaller pieces of equipment can be stored inside the Gen-X’s storage compartment. For increased sound quality the Gen-X has a hard polypropylene shell, but because of this the back panel has to be shaped to fit the spine for comfort. The Gen-X uses 3 oval speakers that have been arranged to create the ‘new face of outdoor performing’.

Although named a ‘buskers amp’ this could in fact be used by any musician on the move. Gen-X Buskers Amp can be used outside, powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery, or indoors powered by an AC adaptor.

Framed by local, organic, and sustainable food trends, popular interest in urban, backyard, and community agriculture has been surging in recent years. At the same time, “virtual gardening” applications, games and tools, from Farmville to iBotanika, have transformed gardening from a low-tech, introspective pursuit, to an information-rich, social experience that hybridizes physical and virtual environments and activities. This Smart Garden project explores how “Smart” technologies such as chemical and thermal sensors (pH, moisture, solar exposure), automated mechanical processes (watering, lighting, fertilizing, etc), and information monitoring and control systems, developed for large-scale agro-businesses, could be deployed within an ecosystem of new products, applications, and services geared for the consumer market.

Smart Garden creative process was framed by three main goals:

Here are the top 10 of our favorite designs:

1. Embrace Infant Warmer by Linus Liang (United States of America), Naganand Murty (India), Rahul Panicker (India) and Jane Chen (United States of America)

Each year, there are around 20 million babies born prematurely, and 4 million of them die. Babies’ lives can be used by providing them with thermal regulation from incubators. However, traditional incubators are expensive and required electricity which usually not available in urban/rural areas. Embrace infant warmer is a smart and cost-effective technology that provides heat to an infant at a constant temperature to fulfill a condition for survival. It’s been carefully engineered to maintain baby’s temperature at consistent 37 degrees for around 4-6 hours even without electricity.
